Sir William Pettingell was also a knight of the realm and a keen sailor of note. Bill was also kind enough to nominate me for membership of the great Prince Alfred Yacht Club on Sydney’s Pittwater which lead to many years of magnificent sailing of my 34 ft masthead sloop Azurite (with a bright blue slash near the waterline!) on that unbelievably beautiful waterway, exploring the Hawkesbury beyond and offshore between Sydney and Newcastle. Wonderful memories, including meeting up with John and Dinah Fuller, who motored by one day when I had Azurite at anchor off Mackeral Beach! His keen prospector’s eyesight saw the name Azurite on my yacht’s transom and he had to check out the potential!! A great reunion!
