Professor “Dick” Velzeboer, Technological University, Delft, Holland, Marine mining consultant (deceased)

Prof. P.T. Velzeboer • Professor of Mining Engineering (1961-1981) at Delft University in the Netherlands • Major influence on mechanistion of coal mining engineering in the Netherlands and Britain (DSM and National Coal Board). • Developed research into the extraction of minerals using dredging technology (this was for Planet with the participation of Graham Brown). • Took new students to the coal mines in South Limburg. The excursions are still held, only with far more students going to different kinds of companies. • His striking bearing and strong personality meant that his influence on the developments within the department and the Mijnbouwkundige Vereeniging was considerable. In the 1970’s Professor Velzeboer introduced a new graduation subject: ocean mining engineering. On 28 January 1977 the new ocean mining laboratory was opened.
